5 Math 5 

Below are a list of links and activities that have been compiled to enhance the classroom curriculum, while giving students the opportunity to address the eight intelligences identified by the Theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner.  In most cases, links and activities are closely related to the topics and themes covered in the curriculum.  Some links and activities, however, may divert from textbook content.  These links will take the viewer outside the Greene County Schools Web Page.

Multiple Intelligence Activities
Musical

Bodily-Kinesthetic
1.2.a  Work as a group.  On a sheet of paper write the number "0".  On another sheet write "1".  Continue writing all the numbers (0-9) on separate sheets of paper. Give each participant one sheet of paper with one number on it.  Stand up and arrange the numbers to form the greatest and least possible numbers.  Have each person say aloud his or her place value in the number.  Swap and continue. 
Logical-Mathematical
1.3.a Use an almanac to research average annual rainfall in different areas of the United States or in different areas of the world.  Create a graph to show your information.  Display your graph in your classroom. 
Verbal-Linguistic
1.4.a  After completing the above activity (Logical-Mathematical) or after researching the amount of rainfall in several U.S. cities, write a short report on what you have learned.   
Visual-Spatial
1.5.a Gather magazines and newspapers.  Make make a collage titled "Large and Small Numbers."  Look for large and small numbers in the magazines and newspapers to cut out.  Use these numbers to build your collage.  Display your collage in your classroom.

1.7.a Complete the activities on the "Do You Know Your Place?" webquest.  When you have finished give your personal quiz to your teacher. 
Naturalist
1.8.a  Choose a region of the world you want to know more about and research several animals that live there.  Using a place value chart, write down the estimated number of animals in the area.  Complete and turn into your teacher.

Bodily-Kinesthetic
2.2.a   Work with other students.  Use tape to form a line on the floor.  Each student stands at the line and jumps forward across the line.  Measure and record the distance each student jumps.  Find the difference between the longest and the shortest jump. 
Logical-Mathematical
2.3.a   Investigate and find out how many students are in each grade at your school.  Make a pictograph that will show this information.  Display your pictograph. 
Verbal-Linguistic
2.4.a   Research the history of numbers in an encyclopedia, on the internet, or both.  Write a report about what you learn.  Share the information with your teacher and class. 
Visual-Spatial
2.5.a   Create a menu for a restaurant where you would like to eat.  Include prices for all your items.  Find five different ways a customer could spend $5.00 in your restaurant.  Then find the different meal combinations one could buy if he or she had $10.00 or $20.00. 
Interpersonal
2.6.a   With a friend research a timed sporting event, such as speed skating, skiing, or a track event.  List the years and places where the four fastest times occurred.  Share your findings with your class and discuss any trends you see.

3.3.b  Create a class of ten imaginary students.  Give each student ten imaginary grades.  Find the mode, mean, and median for each student.

3.4.a  Using the graph created in activity 3.6.a below, make up at least five questions about your graph.  Give the questions and graph to your teacher.
3.4.b  Go to the "Understanding Probability" webquest.  Make sure to visit all resource sites and complete the entire process. 
Visual-Spatial
3.5.a Use an almanac to research average annual rainfall in different areas of the United States or in different areas of the world. Create a graph to show your information. Display  your graph in your classroom.
3.5.b  You are going to create an advertisement poster.  Ask each of your classmates what his or her favorite kind of car is.  Use this data and create your poster for that car. Display your poster in your classroom. 
Interpersonal
3.6.a  Design and administer a survey of something that interests you.  Go to the "Let's Graph," web site and use the information you gathered to create your own graph.  Print out a copy to use for activity 3.4.a above.
3.6.b  Poll classmates to determine their favorite type of pet.  Be sure to include several choices and ask as many people as possible.  Using the gathered information, create a colored bar graph showing how many people chose which pet.  Don't forget to give your chart a title.  Show your information and chart to your teacher.

Multiple Intelligence Activities
Musical
4.1.a   Create a rhyme to help your classmates remember specific multiplication facts they may find difficult.  You can set your rhyme to popular jingles.   Write your jingle on paper and hand out to those who need them. 
Bodily-Kinesthetic
4.2.a   Work with a friend.  You will need a timer for the activity.  Count the number of times in one minute that you blink, breathe, and feel a heartbeat.  From this information estimate how many times you would do each of these in an hour, a day, a month, and a year. Present this information to your class using a visual display. 
Logical-Mathematical
4.3.a   Get a mail order catalog and a number cube (1-6).  Pick five items from a catalog and round the prices to the nearest dollar.  Roll the number cube once for each to determine the quantity you will buy.  Make a table to show the quantity, individual price, price for each group of the same item, and total cost of your purchase. 
Verbal-Linguistic
4.4.a   Using a Spanish dictionary, look up as many math words you can find.  Copy each on a sheet of paper and give to your teacher.  Share the information with your class or make a poster of the words you learned. 
Visual-Spatial
4.5.a   Research quilt-making in books and magazines.  Study the patterns of the quilts and determine the number of fabric pieces needed to make quilts. Make a chart showing the number of pieces needed to quilt the top and backing.  Give completed chart and any research found to your teacher. 
Interpersonal

Intrapersonal
4.7.a   Complete the webquest "Local Student Chased Up Tree."  Keep copies of all assignments to your teacher.  Complete the rubric at the end and give it to your teacher also. 
Naturalist
4.8.a   You want to know what color of car more people have in your community. Observe the street  in your community for one hour at the same time each day for a week.  Decide of you can use this information to answer your question.  If you think that you can, make a hypothesis.  See if your classmates will agree.  They may even want to do their own
observations.

6.4.a   Write out the process for doing a long division problem.  Make sure your work is neat and easy to understand.  Proofread your work and give your teacher a final copy.  Ask him or her if you can supply the directions to students who are having difficulty with the process.

7.2.a  Work with in small groups to create the geometric shapes with your bodies. If available, take pictures with a digital camera (each school should have one).  Print out the pictures and label each.  Also, tell how many sides and angles each has.

7.4.a  Create a picture dictionary with terms related to the geometric shapes.  Make sure to use complete sentences and include pictures.  Bind the pages into a "book" complete with title page and table of contents.

7.5.a  Cut pictures from old magazines.  Identify and label as many different geometric shapes as possible.  Create a bulletin board with pictures and definitions for each geometric shape.

7.8.a  Identify various objects in nature (flowers, leaves, trees, etc.). Provide and example, if possible. Explain whether the items have symmetry.
