MATH 4

Below are a list of links and activities that have been compiled to enhance the classroom curriculum, while giving students the opportunity to address the eight intelligences identified by Howard Garner.  In most cases, links and activities are closely related to the topics and themes covered in the curriculum.  Some links and activities, however, may divert from textbook content.  These links will take the viewer outside the Greene County Schools Web Page.

Multiple Intelligence Activities

Bodily-Kinesthetic
1.2.a You will need to work with three or four other students.  Each of you will need to collect data about a part of your school building that could be counted, such as rooms, steps, doors, and windows.  Complete the collection of data.  Create a graph that will compare these parts of your school building.  Share the graph with your class and an explanation of how it was created.

1.5.a  Work in a small group with two or three other students.  You will need magazines, newspapers, and textbooks.  Look through these resources for several examples of ways in which 3-, 4-, and 5- digit numbers are used.  Share your findings with your class.

2.1.a  Learn a song that has to do with money, such as "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?"  Try to find the words and the music.  Make a tape or CD and share with your class.

2.6.a  Work with a group of  two or three of  your classmates. You will need sales circulars from local  supermarkets or ads from newspapers.  Identify items in the circulars that can be used to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Decide which items to buy for each meal and how many or how much are needed to feed your group.  Make a chart and calculate the total cost of  food for the meals.

4.2.a  Go to the WebQuest "A Picture is worth a Zillion Words" and complete the activities.  An evaluation rubric is provided at the end of the quest.  Use the rubric to evaluate your work.  Give everything to your teacher. 
Logical-Mathematical
4.3.a  Gather data about the colors in your classmates' clothing.  Using this data create a bar graph that will compare the different colors that are being worn.  Share your graph with your classmates and ask them questions that can be answered by looking at the information shown on the graph. 
Verbal-Linguistic
4.4.a  Scan newspapers or magazines to find bar graphs.  Provide a display for your class.  Discuss the data contained in the graphs, identifying their scales and labels.

4.6.a  Conduct a survey of your classmates on the topic of  favorite fruits.  Make a pictograph to display the results of your survey.  Share your pictograph with your class.

6.2.a  You will need magazines and newspapers.  Cut out pictures and letters to make at least ten multiplication collages.  Ask a classmate to write multiplication problems to go with the collages.  You may do this activity more than once if you would like.

6.4.a  Find some examples of children's poetry that relate to mathematics.  Write some of your own rhymes or poems about mathematics and share them with your classmates.
