of the gifts on Friday, December 7, 2007. Special guests were as
follows: members of the Greene County School Board, Central office
staff,
Bill Brown EMA Director & Director of Homeland Security, Barbara
Sourtherland a representative of local farmsrs and
State
Representative David Hawk. His speech is as follows: We are gathered here this morning to honor some very special students, students who chose to give rather than receive this Holiday Season. At this point it is integral to remember our principal Yhona Jones and Assistant Principals Kristi Christopher & Tim Shelton; for their implementation and execution of the Character Counts Program. The Character Counts Program focuses on six pillars of good character which include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. This program helped lay the foundation from which our project was built. Our project came about after a discussion in our Social Studies class. The students and I have been learning about the drought and its devastating effects on farmers through the Newspapers in Education Program sponsored by The Greeneville Sun. After our discussion the question “What can I do?” arose. It was ultimately decided that rather than exchange presents with one another, we would use that money to donate to the Hay Relief effort to help offset the direct cost to farmers. Upon hearing about our project several other classes decided to join in the effort. I would personally like to thank every student, teacher, and parent who helped make this project a reality. And it is at this point we would like to present Mr. Bill Brown with our donation. A donation of over three hundrend dollars was given. Other classes participating were: First Grade: Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Malone and Mrs. Wilhoit, Second Grade: Mrs. McCoy, Fourth Grade: Mrs. Bueck, Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Myers. |
