Twenty-one veterans were honored during the Veterans Day program on November 10. The event was organized by Amy Luttrell and her fifth-grade class. As the veterans entered the gym, they signed their names, military branches, and years of service. After "veteran" Grandpa Russell led the group in the pledge of allegiance and everyone sang the national anthem, "veteran" Gerald Rudd led the invocation. Tyler read an essay about the U.S. Constitution before his fifth grade class recited the Preamble and sang "This Land is Your Land." Haley, Chelsea, Brook, and Courtney read original essays on "What Veterans Day Means to Me."
A video was shown featuring actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who shared her feelings about veterans and Veterans Day and gave students ideas on how to honor veterans. Col. John Cox, who served 45 years in the U.S. Army, was the guest speaker.
Students then presented original cards to the 21 veterans as they were introduced. After applause, the veterans gathered for a photo and received more cards created by the students. Veterans attending were: Harold Russell, Gerald Rudd, John Cox, Gary Heath, Joe Buchanan, Larry Fillers, Winfred Solomon, Ronald Dixon, Bill Anderson, Arthur Ricker, Billy Casteel, Wayne Campbell, Bryan Weller, Paul Winchester, Dale Luttrell, Hubert Metcalf, Kay Broyles, Dale Massey, Ryan Swatzell, Jim Thacker, and Bennie Wilson.
