ELEMENTARY ROUND ROBIN RULES, Greene County Schools, 2006-2007
I. General Rules
A. Because of the academic values, all schools are invited to be a member of the Greene County Elementary Round Robin; however, participation is on a voluntary basis.
B. The team for each school will consist of four eighth grade students. No substitutions will be permitted after the contest begins except for an emergency.
C. The Round Robin coach of each school, who receives a supplement for working with the team members after school hours, will be responsible for having the members of the school’s team at the Central Office by the starting time of the match.
D. Questions, with the exception of current events, will be taken from currently adopted 8th grade textbooks. Current events questions will be taken from the front page and first sports page of The Greeneville Sun newspapers published within one week of the meet.
E. Central Office personnel will be responsible for writing the questions for each Round Robin contest.
F. Representatives from the participating schools of the division will serve as judges, scorekeepers, and timekeeper.
G. Members of each division of the Round Robin will decide if a trophy or trophies will be given to the teams in that particular division. Each division will be responsible for purchasing the trophies.
H. The Greene County Board of Education will furnish a plaque for the county-wide winner each year.
II. Competition
A. There will be four rounds of general knowledge questions consisting of rounds for math, social studies, science and English.
B. Each student of the four-member team will be given an opportunity to answer one question, which will be randomly selected. Value of each question will be 10 points.
C. The 5th round will be for current events taken from The Greeneville Sun. All teams will respond to the same four questions. When a question is asked, team members may quietly discuss the answer and one person per team will record the answer. After participants have had time to record the team answer, one member from each school will be called upon to present the team’s written and oral response to the question.
D. A spelling word will be given to each team after all students have answered or attempted to answer their questions in each round. Spelling words will be given to each team regardless of the number of questions answered correctly. Spelling words may be spelled through team participation. All members of the team may discuss the spelling of the word, but only one spelling of the word will be considered. The spelling of the word is to be given by the team captain. Greene County Spelling Bee rules will be followed.
E. If all questions are answered correctly, including the one spelling word, the team may earn 50 points in each round.
F. Students may challenge a question or answer at the time it is given but not afterward. A red marker will be placed at each team’s table and raised when challenging—only participating students or judges will be permitted to challenge. The judges’ decision will be final on all challenges.
III. Time
A. Thirty seconds will be allowed for all individual answers with the exception of mathematics.
