The Parent/Family Involvement plan is intent on providing support to ensure understanding and implementation of federal, state, and local standards for family engagement at Chuckey Elementary School within the perimeters of the Greene County Schools District Plan. The district plan has been developed by a coordinated effort of representatives from the district staff, community members, and parents. Teachers, parents, and the school administrator have developed the school plan.
A. The Parent Involvement Steering Team will serve as the technical advisors for the school in all aspects of family and community engagement. Their responsibilities include the following:
1. Serve on the Parent Involvement Planning Team
2. Will designate a parent to represent Chuckey School on the Parent Advisory Committee for the district
3. Maintain a family advisory committee to include family resource center director, teachers, parents, community members, and the school administrator
4. Schedule meaningful professional development in family engagement
5. Provide training for parents
6. Assess and evaluating the effectiveness of activities
7. Maintain and review school survey data.
8. Participate in the annual Parenting Fair
9. Maintain and expand the Chuckey Family Resource Center
B.
The Chuckey Elementary School Parent
Involvement
team will follow the guidelines of the
district Parent Involvement Plan.
C.
The school administrator will ensure
that
designated Title I funds will be spent for
parent involvement activities.
II. Sharing information with parents:
A.
The school parent involvement plan will be
distributed to all school personnel. The
officers of Chuckey School’s parent organization will be provided a
copy to
share with members of their organization. Information will also be
posted on
the school’s website.
B.
Student Achievement – Chuckey Elementary School
will follow the policy of the Greene County School System that parents
will
receive frequent student performance reports.
Grade reports will be issued for each six-week period to the
parents of
each student. Mid-term (3 week reports)
will be issued to parents of students that have grades that have
declined or
are unsatisfactory. The parents of all
students involved in Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP)
will
receive Home Reports in a timely manner upon receipt from the State
Department. Student Achievement
information will be presented annually to families at school-wide
meetings.
C. School Performance – Reporting of each school’s and the District’s performance in the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) will be publicized using the following methods:
1. Local news media
2. System and state websites.
3. School newsletters.

In
the event that a school does not make Annual Yearly Progress, No Child
Left
Behind guidelines about Parent Notification will be
followed.
1. Newsletters or notes home.
2. Website.
3. Local news media
4. Announcements at other events (school-wide announcements, CSIA meetings, Booster Club, etc.)
E.
Access to Children’s Official Records – Board
Policy 6.209 directs our schools to provide student records in the
following
method. “Parents or guardians shall have
the right to receive information contained in school records concerning
their
minor child. 1 The Board, unless
informed
otherwise, assumes there are no restrictions regarding the
non-custodial parent's
right to be kept informed of the student's progress and activities. If
restrictions are made relative to the rights of the non-custodial
parent, the
custodial parent shall be requested to submit a certified copy of the
court
order which curtails these specific rights.”
This policy is accessible on the District’s website and a copy
is
located at each school.
F.
Curriculum,
Assessment, and
Proficiency Levels
1. The curriculum for each grade is accessible on both the district and state website. The curriculum description is reference to Standard Performance Objectives, which are linked to the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). Curriculum will be discussed with parents at annual grade level meetings during the first six weeks of school.
2. Assessments
a. Home information pamphlets are issued to each child before administration of Tennessee Writing Assessment and before the Achievement Test for elementary students.
b. School and District newsletters advertise upcoming assessments and their content.
3. The grading system for the Greene County School System is defined in local Board Policy and by the State Board of Education. This information is made available to parents via Student Handbooks, Newsletters, Report Cards, and on the system/school websites.
III.
Defined programs, activities, and training for the
involvement of parents at Chuckey School.
A. The following activities are listed as a minimum requirement for Chuckey Elementary School.
1. Open House – To give parents the opportunity to tour the school and meet the staff. Information will be given annually at this meeting to family concerning the academic and AYP status of Chuckey School.
2. Grade Level Meetings – to discuss curriculum, procedures, and grade level requirements with grade level teachers
3. Parent – Teacher Conferences – The system will schedule 3 open sessions per year. Chuckey School will respond to parent needs in meeting at any time convenient to the parent/family member.
4. Chuckey Elementary School will continue to assist and participate in the operation of a Parent-Teacher organization (CSIA).
5. Chuckey Elementary will have an active Parent Advisory Committee called the Family Advisory Committee. This committee will meet at least quarterly with the school administration.
B. Parents will be provided with information that will include at least the following:
1. School-year calendar.
2. Student Discipline Policy
3. Homework Policy
4. Attendance Policy
5. Grading Scale
6. No Child Left Behind required notifications:
a. Title I eligibility
b. AYP Status
c. Rights of parents to request information on “Teacher Qualifications”
7. Chuckey Handbook
8. KNOWS Notebook for home/school communication
9. Student/home daily planners (grades 3-5)
C. Training activities will be available from the district at Chuckey School for the following subjects:
1. Training for school leadership teams for implementation of No Child Left Behind requirements in parent involvement.
2. Strategies for involving parents in Parent-Teacher organizations.
3. Strategies for involving parents in the school for the school staff. (In-service or staff development)
4. At least four teachers will attend the East Tennessee Title I Conference.
5. Upper East Tennessee Educational Cooperative in-service opportunities will be available for Chuckey Elementary teachers.
D. Annual Greeneville/Greene County Parenting Fair. This venue offers a liaison atmosphere for schools, staff, and parents. Chuckey Elementary School will have an exhibit highlighting our school and family resource center.
IV. The following strategies are listed to improve homework, attendance and discipline.
A. Homework
1. Reading Coach Tutoring will be available to students in grades 3-5 that meet the selected criteria. Funds for this program will be paid for by the Niswonger Foundation.
2. After School Tutoring is provided for students in grades 4 and 5 who meet the selection criteria.
3. Homework tips in Parent Newsletters.
4. Parent/Teacher Email.
5. Notes/Letters from the teacher.
6. Personal contact by the teacher or parent.
7. Parent/teacher conferences.
8. KNOWS notebook/ specified homework folder
9. Student planners (grades 3-5)
B. Attendance
1. Explicit attendance policy requires parent contact upon absence.
2. System Intervention Specialist works closely with all schools in matters of attendance and parent notification.
3. Five and Ten day letters are sent home to encourage and inform parents of students with excessive absences.
4. Chuckey School provides rewards for good attendance.
· Attendance drawing for perfect/perfect attendance each six weeks
· Goal Cards are given each six weeks for perfect attendance.
· Attendance awards are given on Honor’s Day.
C. Discipline
1. System discipline policy is available online, in student handbooks or folders, and a copy is maintained at all schools.
2. An alternative school is available as a resource for students with discipline problems to allow them to remain in school.
3. Chuckey School has implemented a school-wide positive behavior support program (SWPBS).
· KNOWS Tickets Reward System
· Student of the Month (for each homeroom) provided with yard signs and other privileges
· Compliment Chain in each classroom to reward following the rules as a class.
· Technical support with UT Partnership for ED Excellence
· Monthly SWPBS team meetings with parents, community members, students, and faculty
· Student of the Day
· Bus rewards for good behavior (double KNOWS tickets and drawing for prizes)
· Parent volunteers help with KNOWS ticket exchange
4. In school suspension with intensive behavioral reflection time
5. Chuckey Elementary uses CHARACTER COUNTS! as its character education model.
6. Morning announcement of character trait of the day during Character Counts! Week
V.
Procedures for parents to learn about the
course of
study for their children and have access to learning materials.
A.
Open houses and parent nights. Chuckey School will use these opportunities
to share course requirements with parents.
B.
All elementary curriculum standards are maintained
on the system webpage.
C.
Chuckey School will use parent contacts
of all
types to share information about the course of study for students.
D. Information will be made available about student requirements for the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP).
VI. Every effort will be made to help parents with limited English, disabilities and migrants to insure they have access to the Parent Involvement Plan, school and/or system information, and school performance reports written in an understandable format. The special accommodations needed for these occasions will be addressed as needed on a case-by-case method.
· Family Resource Center director will work with the ESL teacher, migrant education program, and Telamon to provide services to families.
· Chuckey Elementary will work with families to provide resources and information. Assistive technology and alternative formats of communication will be provided as needed.
