ATTENDANCE POLICY
The following shall be the attendance policy of the Greene County School System:

Regular attendance is a key to good school grades, overall achievement and rewarding education, as well as being required by Tennessee State law.

It shall be the duty of the principal to report to the attendance officer the names of all children who have been absent five (5) days without adequate excuse. (This means a total of five days during the school year, and not necessarily five consecutive days.) The attendance officer shall then proceed against said children and their parents/guardians in the juvenile court system as required by TCA 49-6-3007.

                   1. Personal illness-doctor’s excuse required after the third day;
                   2. Illness of immediate family member-doctor’s excuse required after 3rd
                   3. Death in the family;
                   4. Extreme weather conditions;
                   5. Religious observances-parents’ statement required;

Regular attendance at school should be a habit. Regular attendance is also the law. Every student should strive for perfect attendance. Parents are held legally responsible for keeping their children in school. Students who are absent from school must bring a note to the teacher explaining the absence. Please do not call the office. Telephone excuses are not accepted as proof of an excused absence. When a child becomes an attendance problem, he or she will be declared truant. A doctor’s statement will be the only excuse accepted for truancy problems.

The Chuckey School staff hopes that parents will cooperate in the important aspect of school attendance. It is hoped that every effort is made to schedule doctor and dentist appointments for after school hours. However, if you need to check your child out of school early, you must come to the office and sign the check out form.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE-Students at Chuckey School are rewarded for perfect attendance. To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

TARDY OR EARLY SIGN OUT
  •
School begins at 7:45 a.m. each morning. Students need to be in their classrooms before the 7:45 a.m. announcements, or they are considered tardy. Teachers begin providing instruction to their classes immediately afterwards. When students are tardy, they miss instruction and directions given to the class
  •
All missed time is documented on the computer.
  •
Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, neighbors, etc. do not have the legal right to check out students without written permission by the parent or legal guardian.
  •
No students will be allowed to walk home or ride a different bus home without written permission from the parent or legal guardian and signed by an administrator.

Parents must NOT go to the classrooms to pick up their children at anytime without first signing them out in the school office and obtaining a visitors pass.

SCHOOL CLOSING/EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Sometimes school is closed or dismissed early due to weather conditions. When this occurs, it is essential that parents plan ahead. Here is some important information for you.

BLIZZARD, SNOW, ICE OR MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS

If, during the school day, there is a severe weather warning of blizzard conditions or a severe heavy snow storm, which  would make driving hazardous before the regular closing of school, these procedures will be followed:

If hazardous driving conditions caused by a blizzard, heavy snow storm or ice should occur by 6:00 a.m., notification would be given by Central Office to radio and television stations serving the district. The radio and television stations will announce school closings between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., if at all possible.

If there is a mechanical malfunction of the furnace or heating system, water line, electricity or sewage system, the school will notify Central Office. If Central Office personnel decide to dismiss school early, Central Office will inform the school of the decision. The school will contact bus drivers and dismiss at a designated time.

FIRE OR BOMB THREAT EXIT PROCEDURES

When the fire alarm sounds, students, faculty and others in the building will evacuate the building via the pre-arranged evacuation route, in an orderly manner. If an exit is blocked, the alternate evacuation route should be utilized. Students should do the following at the sound of the fire alarm:

NOTE:  Students should take nothing with them but their coats and handbags located at desk.
