Students are also offered a variety of extracurricular activities including: after school tutoring for reading and math, football, basketball, softball, baseball, cheer leading, and volleyball. Parenting workshops such as Family Math sessions are offered periodically.
FACULTY AND STAFF BELIEFS We believe all students are capable of learning, achieving or surpassing proficiency, and succeeding in a safe and nurturing environment. We believe that instruction should be data driven and educational decisions should be research-based in order to meet state standards and the requirements of NCLB. We believe students learn in a variety of ways, and our classroom strategies should match those learning styles. We believe in emphasizing good self esteem and character education. We believe that policies and procedures for student learning should be established through steering committee meetings, team meetings, grade level meetings, S-team meetings, and faculty meetings. We believe that by utilizing existing resources, trying new ideas, integrating new technologies, and working toward a partnership with home, school, and community, optimum, success can be achieved. We believe that communication and collaboration between all stakeholders is essential to our success.
The School Improvement Steering Committee consists of the principal, one parent, one student, community member, and a group of teachers trained in development, leadership, and implementation of common goals to improve our school. These team leaders, as they are called, represent a group of teachers who serve on a designated team. The steering committee meets one time per month to discuss: implementation of the current year's plan, improvements or modifications to the plan, information and fact gathering, development of new goals as needed, and team reports. There are six teams that meet one time per month. Teacher and staff members are assigned to teams based on qualifications. An agenda is prepared ahead of time and followed by the team leader. Members make suggestions, develop ideas, and help carry out their team's plan for the year.
Our school currently has three targeted areas for school improvement. The goals are selected based on the following data summary: teacher surveys, parent surveys, student surveys, Terra Nova test objective performance for grades 3-8, STAR Attendance, Terra Nova test's NP or NCE graph, TVASS report, TCAP Writing Assessment scores grades 5 and 8, Terra Nova Class Summary report, LEA Summary by School Title I Assessment, STAR Early Literacy, 4Sight Test results, and Greene County's 21st Century Report Card.
